These saakhi’s (anecdote) has been repeated several times during Satsang’s, and yours truly is tempted to quote it here on this community. These saakhi related to Sikh Guru’s were quoted by our Masters as an example for various tenets of Sant Mat.

First Saakhi relates to the fourth Sikh Guru Ramdas Ji Maharaj, who was son-in-law of the third Sikh Guru Amardas Ji Maharaj. Guru Amardas Ji was quite old (sixty-two years) when he came in presence of a Guru himself. He became successor when he was in his seventies!

When Guru Amardas Ji decided to construct a well for water (Baoli in Punjab – this has steps leading to the water area), Guru Ramdas Ji ignored all and indulged in the same mitti-ki-sewa as others. He too carried basket full of earth. His own relatives who visited him during this time admonished him for doing menial sewa in his father-in-law’s house!

Guru Ramdas Ji who was also related to Guru Amardas Ji (as his son-in-law) shifted residence and stayed with him. He along with his wife took great care in the form of personal needs of their Guru and father. However, this was not taken in good spirit amongst his relatives. Even as of today, nobody appreciates a son-in-law who indulges in service of his father-in-law. Ignoring all banter and insults, Guru Ramdas Ji carried about his duties with love and respect towards his Guru.  read more »

I recently read a book on the sanctity of married life. Actually I feel that marriage is the biggest paradox of our lives. On one hand we are being asked to overcome all desires in order to attain higher consciousness and on the other hand we are also asked to marry in order to propagate this world. Marriage would obviously bind the person further to this material world. But this book gave a clear idea as to what love is and how marriage can help a person experience a higher consciousness.  Love in its lowest form is lust. Lust is the satisfaction of gross needs. It is nothing but a bodily concept which helps a person satisfy his or her bodily needs. The next stage is love at a more subtle level. In this stage lust is more subdued but it depicts itself in the form of longing for the beloved. Still the bodily concept is very much there.The next stage is love at the mental sphere. In this stage the beloved has its own worth and standing in the eyes of the lover. Here the lover works under the will of the beloved. He acts selflessly and has no desires. In this stage also there is the bodily concept and the condition of divine love is not reached.The last stage is the stage of divine love.  read more »
